LOCAL WCAG CONTRAST CHECKER

Check the contrast between two colors.

Calculate text contrast for two sRGB hex colors and compare the ratio with WCAG AA and AAA text thresholds. The calculation stays in your browser.

Enter a six-digit sRGB hex value, with or without #. Example: #767676 on #ffffff.

Contrast ratio: 4.54:1

Sample text at this foreground and background color.

Contrast is calculated locally from the two hex colors.

How the result is calculated

Each sRGB channel is linearized, then relative luminance is calculated as 0.2126R + 0.7152G + 0.0722B. The contrast ratio is (lighter luminance + 0.05) ÷ (darker luminance + 0.05). For example, #767676 text on #ffffff has a ratio of about 4.54:1, which passes WCAG AA for normal text (4.5:1) but not AAA for normal text (7:1).

WCAG 2.2 SC 1.4.3 uses thresholds of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. SC 1.4.6 uses 7:1 and 4.5:1 for its enhanced AAA thresholds. “Large” means at least 18 point text or 14 point bold text under the WCAG definition. This checker evaluates only the two entered colors against these text thresholds. It does not inspect a page, determine actual font size, or assess non-text contrast or other accessibility requirements. Page content updated November 3, 2026.

Good to know

What colors can I enter?

Enter six-digit sRGB hex values such as #767676 or #ffffff. Short hex values, alpha channels, and named colors are not accepted.

What counts as large text?

WCAG defines large-scale text as at least 18 point regular text or at least 14 point bold text. This is a size classification, not something the tool can determine from the color inputs.

Does a pass mean my page is fully accessible?

No. This evaluates only text contrast for the selected colors. Check the actual typography and other accessibility requirements separately.

Do my colors leave the browser?

No. The calculation runs locally in this browser tab. The tool does not fetch or upload the colors.

Is it free?

Yes, during beta. Optional usage-credit plans are coming soon. Payments are not available and no credits are required.

How it works

1. Choose or enter a foreground text color and background color as six-digit hex values. 2. Review the contrast ratio and AA/AAA results for normal and large text. 3. Preview the selected pair. Colors are calculated locally.

Good to know

Which colors are accepted?

Enter six-digit sRGB hex colors with or without a leading #. Short hex, alpha values, and named colors are not accepted.

What are the AA and AAA thresholds?

WCAG 2.2 SC 1.4.3 uses 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. SC 1.4.6 uses 7:1 and 4.5:1 respectively for enhanced contrast.

Does a passing result guarantee accessibility?

No. This calculation covers only the entered text and background colors. It does not inspect a page, determine rendered font size, assess non-text contrast, or audit other accessibility requirements.

Are the colors uploaded?

No. The calculation runs in this browser tab; the tool does not fetch or upload the color values.

Is it free?

Yes, during beta. Optional usage-credit plans are coming soon. Payments are not available and no credits are required.

Methodology and limitations

Parse each input as a six-digit sRGB hex color, linearize its channels using the WCAG sRGB transfer function, compute relative luminance with coefficients 0.2126, 0.7152 and 0.0722, and divide the lighter luminance plus 0.05 by the darker luminance plus 0.05. Compare the result with WCAG 2.2 SC 1.4.3 and 1.4.6 thresholds. It evaluates only the selected color pair and does not inspect actual typography or other page content.
